Why do gamers purchase virtual products?

Brian Meyer, Master's student in International Business, has won third place in the German Student Research Competition held by the mo'web research market research institute. The jury was impressed by the theoretical portion of the Master's thesis which saw him attempt to explain purchase trends amongst gamers. What motivates players to acquire virtual items? To take one example, why did players of the "Dota 2" online game purchase a virtual sword for 299 Euros? mo'web research will now finance an online survey for the student worth 2,500 Euros to collect empirical data on this question.
